Watershed Premium Wines Restaurant, 15 February 2011

A lovely outlook over the vines sets the atmosphere for a great lunch.
We ordered the tasting plate as an entrée, it has a bit of each of the entrees on the menu and is a great chance to try many of the different flavours on offer. The salmon “pastrami” was definitely the stand out.
I tried a bit of Rem’s Marron salad – a nice combination of flavours with the peach.
The beetroot soufflé was light, fluffy and full of flavour. What looked liked noodles was actually grated apple and alongside was mulberries and miniature apples. A nice summer dish that worked nicely with my rose.
Asparagus was tender but firm and was served with a small amount of buffalo mozzarella. It didn’t need anything else.
Overall food was nicely cooked and explored interesting combinations that showcased the fresh summery ingredients. Pricey but not outlandish for a good meal in great surroundings.

After resisting the temptation of the Watershed Cellar Door we opted for the Restaurant over the Café menu (no surprises there). There would be no such resisting a tasting plate comprising every entrée on the menu- from aptly titled smoked salmon pastrami (crusted in mustard and coriander seed) to lamb carpaccio with marshmallow and pea puree.
Marron salad combined peach, fennel and avocado with a green tomato gazpacho. The texture of the marron left a little to be desired, however the flavours worked well together (including just the right amount of salt to temper the tartness of the peach). A side of asparagus was dressed in a subtle vinaigrette and served with buffalo mozzarella, while a Watershed Viogner provided  a satisfying accompaniment. Our first Margaret  River Winery but I suspect  one of the standout dining rooms.
Still, I wanted something more… and the Cellar Door obliged resoundingly.
